What is body-mind therapy?

Body-Mind Therapy is an approach to healing and growth that looks at a person as an integrated whole: mind, body, and spirit. In contrast to traditional psychotherapy or "talk therapy," which focuses on life history and the analysis of thought, the Body-Mind therapist appreciates not only these aspects, but also is interested in the relationship between a person’s mental, physical, and spiritual experiences. This approach is also called Holistic or Integrative. Techniques used in Body-Mind Therapy include exercise, individual Bio feedback, yoga therapy, hypnosis, meditation, nutritional and wellness counselling, NLP, Somatic movement therapy, EMDR among others.

Psychotherapy, Counselling or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy are usually a very mental activity. We call this a top down approach. People are talking about thoughts, feelings, memories and goals. This is all valuable work and is a significant part of what happens in my sessions. However, in recent times there have been a growing number of therapists working with the body-mind connection (somatic psychology) and others working with the spiritual realm (transpersonal psychology). My approach to therapy is truly integrative because it incorporates the body, mind and spirit.

The idea that thoughts and emotions influence health outcomes (and vice versa) is an ancient concept that was initially abandoned by Western medicine researchers. Today, research shows the interactions of the mind and body and the role these interactions play in disease formation and recovery. Science is finally catching up with what the ancient teachers, philosophers and mystics knew all along. Complementary and alternative interventions, such as mind-body therapies & somatic therapy are increasingly being used by cancer survivors for disease prevention, immune system enhancement, and symptom control.
